Event 2

The Two Cultures is something that still intrigues me this late in the class. The divide that many see between art and science is something that some people struggle to deal with. Finding the proper medium to use can be hard, but in the zoom with Dr. Daniel Jay this past week, he showed us that anything can be used. In his case he used the periodic table for inspiratoin and his creations were wonderful.

The coolest piece for me was his piece using gunpowder to show scenes of violence. Something about the piece felt real to me. By using one of the very components that causes violence, to show violence, was powerful. It was a way to make a statement with the art because Dr. Jay took something dangerous and made it beautiful. He broke down the aspects of voilence and turned it into an inspiring piece.

This simple piece in his collection highlights a much bigger aspect of life: the need for science in the art world. They are one and the same and lost without the other. I had never thought about using such mediums to represent aspects of life or to make such lasting images until this meeting. His creations with the buildingblocks of everything we know today was truly inspiring. Taking the raw elements of Earth and using them to create art is something simplistic and beautiful. I believe that many other pieces like this could be used to create lasting art pieces. If scientists and artists could come together, some amazing work could be done for both parties.
