Week 7 Neuroscience + Art

Our topic in this week's lecture was something that I previously had little knowledge of. Neuroscience has always been something that I would say has intrigued me but I'd never had the opportunity to learn about it until now. The first intriguing aspect mentioned by Professor Vesna was the idea that consciousness is "one's personal or collective identity". This is something that makes sense but feels strange to me. When you look at previous sections of class such as technology when technology becomes tied to an individual can that be part of your conscious?

As we learned about this week, neuroscience is a very vast topic that can lead to a conversation around dreams. The line between the dreaming world and the physical world has become blurred due to advances in art and technology. Now people are using technology to record the dreams of humans to understand the brain further. Technology like this would've made the lives of Freud and Jung much more interesting. This technology can allow for the consciousness of people to develop further than ever before. Now we can learn from ourselves.

The talk of dreams mentioned reminds me of a very famous movie named "Inception" where people essentially use technology to influence dreams and thus influence an individual to do certain things. This originally seemed far-fetched but now with the ability to record dreams could become a possibility. Everything that we previously knew about the bridge between neuroscience and art can now be changed by the dreaming world.

  1. Hi David,

Great post! I liked how you touched on the blurring between the subconscious mind and the conscious in recent years, and the advancement of technology that can track dreams is really interesting. Inception is also one of my favorite psychological thrillers, and I think we're definitely getting closer to a world where a world you "dream" can be your reality.

  2. Hi David,
I love how you discussed dreaming and the subconscious in your blog post! I also really like the connection that you drew to the movie Inception. I think that's a very interesting observation on how technology and dreaming can come together. Also as a side note, I love the pictures you used, I think they go really well with what you've written.
