Week 8 Nanotech + Art
This week's lecture provided something that was much needed for someone like myself. It caused m to realize that things are never what they seem. The topic of nanotechnology is something that I have heard about and been interested in but never wanted to pursue due to the unknowns surrounding it. It's a field that seemed daunting and scary but actually isn't that at all. Dr. Gimzewski showed me that nanotechnology is something that fills our lives more than we know and is actually a field used much more than we realize.
His comments regarding the idea of a "Top-Down Approach" were something that I believe we use much more than we realize. Taking something significant and slowly making it smaller and smaller is very much like the process of art from what I have learned over the quarter. It always begins with a large idea and gradually becomes hyper-focused on the smaller details of a piece until finally something beautiful is constructed. The foundation is established and then the more precise parts are added later in the process. This is not only something used in making phones and chemistry as Dr. Gimzewski stated but many other things can use this.
The world of nanotechnology is something that I believe we all can learn from even going past art. It's something that has shown a new approach to issues in creating art and in solving issues. By using the "Top-Down Approach", our society can begin to solve important issues that have plagued us for years. By slowly getting down to the smaller and more minute details we can make a change and bring everyone together just by learning about nanotechnology.

Hello David,
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you that there nanotech is such a broad topic and this was also my first time that I was able to explore it a little more. I also have heard about this in some of my classes but I have never taken the time to explore it more. I thought it was really cool that for my first time investigating it I would be able to see the connection with art to start out with. Like with many of the other topics covered I come to realize how art plays a role in it, but investigating this from the start was eye opening. More people should definitely look more into this! I really enjoyed reading your post!
